Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are viewed as more realistic transfer targets for Arsenal than Ollie Watkins this summer, according to a report.

Charles Watts reports in his Daily Briefing that though he believes Ollie Watkins will be on any Arsenal shortlist for a potential striker signing, he’s not a likely recruit by the Gunners.

Watts believes Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig and Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP are far more realistic, particularly given they have release clauses in their contracts.

Mikel Arteta admitted on Wednesday that Arsenal have had to adapt to their lack of a free-scoring centre-forward.

“The reality is we don’t have a striker who is going to score 35, 40 goals – and we have to live with that,” Arteta said. “[We get our goals] from everywhere, and we have to.

“We have many other qualities. And today’s the day to stick behind the players because they have given us so much, they have taken us on this journey and we still have the Premier League to play.”

With that said, nothing is decided yet, and the pursuit of a striker is evidently going to be Arsenal’s key challenge this summer. There’s plenty of potential for twists and turns.

Sky Sports previously reported that Sesko has a €50m (£43m) release clause in his contract, included in his deal as a compromise last summer, to get his move from RB Salzburg over the line.

Arsenal have been linked with Sesko since November, when the Mirror reported that the Gunners had sent scouts to watch him playing in the Bundesliga ahead of a potential move.

The Athletic then reported that Sesko was among the names on Arsenal’s striker shortlist for 2024.

Sesko has 13 goals and two assists in 37 games (18 starts) this season, averaging a goal or assist every 114 minutes.

As for Gyokeres, Portuguese outlet Jornal de Noticias reported earlier this week that Arsenal were growing increasingly likely to make a move for the Swede, and Fabrizio Romano claimed on Wednesday morning that the striker is on the Gunners’ shortlist.

But the media in the player’s home country are less convinced that Arsenal are a genuine option, with Fotboll Direkt denying that a move is a possibility.

Gyokeres has 36 goals and 16 assists in 43 appearances for Sporting this season, helping them to the top of the Liga Portugal, as well as helping them into the final of the Portuguese cup.
