Reports have already begun to emerge that Roma want to sign Wojciech Szczesny on a permanent deal.
The goalkeeper is currently on a season-long loan with the Serie A team but, according to Team Talk, the Italian club is said to be willing to break the Pole’s release clause in order to bring him to the team long term.
However, Arsenal are apparently having none of it and want to bring the 25-year-old back to north London. David Ospina hasn’t exactly been the most reliable back-up goalkeeper and although Woj will never overtake Petr Cech in the pecking order, having someone we can trust on the bench is important.
The question is, does Woj want to come back?
As much as the goalkeeper has always claimed he loves Arsenal, which I’m sure he does, and that he doesn’t want to leave, he does appear to have distanced himself from the club during the loan spell although arguable this is natural since he is physically in another country.
He’s made 19 appearances for Roma so far this season, which is undoubtedly more than he would have made for us and is clearly loved there.
Would he be willing to return if it meant he had to sit on the bench for the foreseeable future?
It should also be mentioned that there’s very little evidence to suggest that a release clause even exists and that Roma have previously acknowledged how difficult it would be to pry the keeper away from Arsenal. With this in mind, a permanent deal isn’t looking likely.
Here are some of Woj’s best bits for Roma this season set to incredibly dramatic music.
