Arsene Wenger has confirmed Mikel Arteta’s contract extension once and for all.

Originally thought to be potentially leaving during the summer transfer window, our Captain has now signed a season long contract extension with us. Although many knew this had been on the cards for a couple of weeks now, it’s finally been confirmed by the boss himself as senior players gradually return to training. The boss spoke to Arsenal Player to explain why he made the decision to keep the 33-year-old at the club.

“He will stay with us for one more year because he has extended his contract,” the boss said.

Well that makes sense.

Wenger continued, “He’s one of the leaders in the club because he’s the captain of the team. I expect him to contribute much more than last season but he also faces a battle. With the number of games we have ahead, we could use his experience, his desire and his quality as it will be vital for next season.”

Arteta made is clear from early on that he had no intention of leaving under is own volition this summer and his loyalty appears to have been rewarded.

The Spaniard was unlucky with injuries last season, but the year before he featured heavily and was a real linchpin for the team.

At Daily Cannon, we’re very happy that he’ll be staying.
