Injured Arsenal player returns to full training pre-Everton clash

Piero Hincapie has returned to full training with Arsenal, less than two weeks after suffering an injury in a post-match warm-down.

Ryan Taylor of the Mirror reports that Piero Hincapie has now returned to training with Arsenal, taking part in a session with the team on Friday.

Hincapie also took part in a training session with Arsenal earlier this week, but he was only doing individual work on that occasion, and there was no expectation he would be available for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

But having now stepped up his recovery with a return to full training, it’s not impossible the left-back will be involved in matchday squads again imminently.

Hincapie suffered his ankle injury during Arsenal’s post-match fitness session following the recent win over Leeds United. He was clearly struggling in the immediate aftermath, with footage showing Illan Meslier needing to pick up his teammate and carry him from the field.

Martin Zubimendi got injured in the same session, but whilst Zubimendi made a quick return to the squad, Mikel Arteta was always clear that Hincapie’s issue looked “a little bit more serious”.

The expectation was that Hincapie could be out for as many as three weeks, but he could now make a comeback just two weeks after suffering the injury.

As well as giving Riccardo Calafiori chances to rest, Hincapie’s return will likely also allow Myles Lewis-Skelly to return to midfield.

Arteta defended Arsenal’s warm-down strategy in the week after the double injury, saying: “When you play these kind of small-sided games, there is contact, and these things can happen.

“They didn’t happen once last season and we did it 37 times I think, so the fact that it’s there, that people are watching and then you think it raises other doubts.

“What we can do is [say] ‘guys’, they are so competitive, ‘when we do that, please don’t touch each other too much,’ to avoid these kind of things, so that’s it.”
