Wojciech Szczesny has revealed in an interview that he never actually wanted to leave Arsenal.

Woj has admitted that when he was sent out on loan to Roma in 2015, he always had his heart set on returning to Arsenal.

“I was always honest with them,” he told the Independent. “When I went there, my only aim was to get back to Arsenal and play for them again.”

“Once I knew that couldn’t happen and I had this opportunity to join Juventus… it was tough.

“Accepting that my time with Arsenal was over was difficult because I never imagined leaving.

“I supported them as a kid and I got to play for the club of my dreams, but life goes on. It was the right thing for me and both clubs and, while one side of me found it difficult to say it was over, the other said lets just get it done.”

Gooners are still pretty confused over why Arsene Wenger decided to let the 27-year-old go this summer. 35-year-old Petr Cech has seen better days, David Ospina is set to leave as he has under two years left on his current deal, and Woj is now one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.

When Juventus came in for him, it was always understood that he would be behind Gianluigi Buffon in the pecking order for at least a year. Therefore, I highly doubt he would have minded sitting on the bench and challenging Cech for a season.

This term, Woj has made two appearances for the Old Lady. He’s kept clean sheets in both.

At least at Arsenal, we know he would have at least made three since that’s how many Ospina has featured in. The Colombia has kept one clean sheet.

I won’t ever understand why Wenger sold Woj. The shot-stopper is brilliant, a product of Arsenal’s academy and wanted to return to north London after a successful loan spell. I’ll never get it.
