Arsenal and England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has left a goodbye message to the supporters following his move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old completed his £40m switch to Anfield earlier today, and while he was too busy with England to speak about the move, he found the time to say goodbye to the Arsenal fans.

Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2011 and made 198 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals. Despite spending such a long time with the Gunners, he never managed to nail down a starting place in his preferred position.

While Arsenal preferred to play on the flanks, the English international had dreams of being a central midfielder. The odd games he got there for Arsenal showed glimpses of his ability, but he never managed to convince Wenger to play him there long-term.

That seemed to have been the main motivation behind the move. He ended up as a right wing-back last season and feared for his future, hence forced a move to the Merseyside giants where he had been promised the chance to play as a midfielder.

James Milner also got the same promise, but ended up as a left back. In the end, it hasn’t worked out at Arsenal and the fans aren’t as upset about his departure as they could be.

Perhaps a clean break was needed for everyone.
