While Monreal doesn’t appear to know that much about Australia itself, apart from the fact that there are kangaroos there, he’s happy to be visiting the fans down under as Arsenal kick off their pre-season tour.

“I’m very happy to go there,” the defender told Arsenal Player.

“I want to enjoy it obviously – to play football – but also to share it with our fans because as everyone knows, Australia is very far from London. It’s going to be a really good experience for us and I hope everybody can enjoy with us.

“It’s a good moment for us because we go to play football, to train, to build good fitness and be ready for the season. And also because we can share, we can be with our fans because Arsenal is a big club.”

The Gunners face Sydney FC on 13 July at the ANZ Stadium and then Western Sydney Wanderers two days later.

Despite Monreal’s form being mostly inconsistent last season, he seemed to find his stride during the final couple of games, and he was a key player at centre-back during Arsenal’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

Therefore, the 31-year-old will probably be eager to get off to a strong start next term.

The Spaniard has been rumoured to be leaving north London this summer with Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac officially joining the Gunners at the end of the month. However, Monreal’s optimism over the trip to Sydney suggests that he could be staying after all.
