With Arsene Wenger confirming the deal to bring Shkodran Mustafi (and Lucas Perez) close and the man himself explaining why he opted to sign for Arsenal, we take a look at what shirt number he could pick.

A 2 when he plays for Germany, the centreback was 5 for Valencia. Of course, he can’t have 5 at Arsenal as that’s Gabriel’s, although you’d have to think that Mustafi will be ahead of the Brazilian in the pecking order.

2, however, could be available.

At present, that belongs to Mathieu Debuchy who wants to leave. Although he’s having a hard time finding a new club because he’s carrying a calf injury, it’s clear that his future is away from Arsenal, and, even if he doesn’t manage to leave in this window, it’s not impossible to see the club taking the number from him. I know I would.

Other numbers that are available are 9 (but that will surely go to Perez, and no centreback should ever wear 9 anyway), 20, 28 and 30.

21 could also be freed up should the club send Calum Chambers out on loan which is something they are trying to sort before the window closes. That’s also a number Mustafi has worn with Germany.

There are a ton of numbers over 30, of course, but it would be unlikely he will take one of those.

So, what do you think?
