Arsenal are one of the teams to pass on signing Cody Gakpo from Europa League group rivals PSV Eindhoven, according to a report.

Eindhoven-based reporter Rik Elfrink reports that Arsenal are one of a number of clubs to pass on signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

As it stands, Leeds are reportedly in the lead for the winger, if PSV sell at all. The situation could go either way at this stage, with PSV looking at potential replacements if Gakpo leaves on deadline day.

Arsenal haven’t really been seriously interested in Gakpo for a while now, according to reports throughout the summer.

Early on in the window, Arsenal were linked with Gakpo by the Dutch media fairly regularly, but reports of interest were never followed up with anything more serious.

The last substantial report was in mid-August, with claims that Arsenal had looked at the winger early in the month, but their interest subsequently cooled.

At the time, Manchester United took over pole position, but United ended up signing Antony from Ajax. As a result, Southampton and then Leeds found themselves favourites.

The 23-year-old left-winger scored 21 goals and assisted 15 in 47 appearances last season, which was an excellent return. He’s followed that up with four goals and six assists in eight games at the start of the current campaign.

Yet there are always doubts over how Eredivisie forwards will translate their form to the Premier League.

Those doubts won’t have been assuaged by Gakpo’s largely uneventful Champions League qualification run, with PSV exiting the qualifiers as the 23-year-old managed just one assist in 390 minutes – a corner.

As a result, PSV are now in Arsenal’s Europa League group. So if the winger ends up staying with his current club, he’ll end up playing at the Emirates Stadium next month anyway.
