Chelsea ended Arsenal’s 11-match winning run with a lovely goal on Sunday and after the match the Chelsea manager was refreshing honest about the impact her change had made on the game.

Arsenal went into the game knowing that they needed a win to regain top spot in the table following Manchester City’s 3-0 win on Saturday against Birmingham.

It all started so well, one-up before 10 minutes were even on the clock through Danielle van de Donk, played in by Vivianne Miedema.

The Blues drew level in the second half, however, through Beth England but it was substitute, Maria Thorisdottir, who stole the headlines with a great strike to win the game in the 85th minute, 11 minutes after coming on.

“If you get it right you’re an unbelievable manager, if you don’t you’re a pile of shite,” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said while grinning. “I got it right today, that for me is what wisdom is about, you’ve got to get more right than not, more often.”

“We were good in the first half but they were better in the second,” Montemurro conceded after the final whistle while acknowledging that the scoreline reflected the game accurately.

“We couldn’t keep the ball and our intensity is all ball-based. We were making a lot of fundamental errors which is unlike us and we got punished for it. With the squad that Chelsea have got, with the individual talent they’ve got, with the size of the squad that they’ve got they should be up there every year. So today is obviously an indication of who they are, they’re a good team, they’re a powerful team.”

Arsenal now sit in third place, one point behind Chelsea in second and three behind league leaders City.

Arsenal play Manchester City next in what is now a must-win game if they are to retain their title this season.
