BBC pundit Danny Mills insisted Lucas Torreira must be the signing of the season after the Uruguayan won Arsenal the three points against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Torreira was the unlikely source of Arsenal’s winning goal at the weekend, scoring a bicycle kick to give Unai Emery’s side the lead late on. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised after the 22-year-old took his goal so nicely against Tottenham Hotspur a week earlier.

The recent goals just add to what has been an incredible start to Premier League life for the midfielder. He’s winning man-of-the-match awards on a weekly basis, and he’s added a lot of steel and intelligence to the Arsenal midfield in and out of possession.

As a result, Danny Mills told BBC Radio 5 Live that he doesn’t think there was a better acquisition this summer.

“Torreira must be the signing of the season,” Mills said. “Everyone has said that Arsenal needed a Gilberto Silva and Patrick Vieira. Arsenal have got a pint-sized Vieira [in the form of Torreira].”

To emphasise just how well Torreira is performing at such a young age, WhoScored‘s statistical analysis lists his strengths as ball interception, taking set-pieces, passing, blocking the ball, concentration and tackling. Under weaknesses, they write simply “player has no significant weaknesses”.

The 5’5″ midfielder used to have “aerial duels” listed as a weakness, unsurprisingly, but he’s even managed to improve that side of his game this season. When he’s pulling out the bicycle kicks, there seems little he can’t do.

Let’s hope Torreira can continue this strong vein of form in the coming weeks.
