The numbers speak for themselves

The study, conducted by football retailer UKSoccerShop, delved into Google search data for Premier and Championship League team shirts over the past five years. Here are the key findings that solidify Arsenal’s popularity:

  • Manchester United topped the list with 321,760 searches for their kit in 2023 alone.
  • Arsenal secured a strong second place with 296,700 searches in 2023.
  • Liverpool follows in third place, with 235,270 searches for their kit in 2023.

Arsenal’s consistent appeal

What makes this data even more impressive is Arsenal’s consistency. The Gunners’ kit has been the second most popular for two years running. This enduring demand for the Arsenal shirt reflects the club’s strong fanbase and the timeless appeal of their classic design.

Rivalry and ranking fluctuations

While Manchester United has typically held the top spot for kit searches, there’s always heated competition. Liverpool briefly dethroned them in 2019, with Arsenal consistently vying for the second or third position.

Other notable findings from the study include:

  • Despite their recent Premier League dominance, Manchester City surprisingly placed fourth, with 183,020 kit searches in 2023.
  • Chelsea, Arsenal’s London rival, ranked fifth with over 170,000 searches for their kit.

The power of fan support

“The data reflects the enduring popularity of Manchester United football shirts among fans. The club’s rich history and global fan base cements its position as a frontrunner in football shirt preferences,” comments Simon Pretswell, CEO of UKSoccerShop.

He adds, “It’s fascinating to see which teams have the highest number of loyal and dedicated fans over the years. For fans, buying a football shirt is a great way to feel part of their team’s community, and many will delight in wearing them to support their favourite teams during the games. The power of fan support is not to be understated, and it is clear teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool have hugely dedicated fans.”
