Brentford have announced the signing of Igor Thiago from Club Brugge, with the striker touted as an Ivan Toney replacement.
Brentford have announced that Igor Thiago will join the club on a five-year deal this summer, when the transfer window opens on July 1st.
Thiago has signed a five-year deal with Brentford, with the option for a sixth, but he’ll remain with Brugge until the conclusion of the current campaign.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Thiago will cost a fee in excess of £30m, suggesting that the striker could be a replacement for Ivan Toney.
Last week, Brentford manager Thomas Frank made some headlines when he told the media that Toney would probably be sold in the summer, due to the length of his contract.
Responding to those comments following his goal against Wolves on Saturday, Toney suggested it showed a lack of desire from his current club to keep him around.
“I see that as he doesn’t want me,” Toney said. “Well yeah, the manager’s said what he’s said.
“Listen, I can’t make clubs come and get me. I’ve just got to keep doing what I do and that’s score goals.
“Like I said, what will be, will be.”
Toney has been heavily linked with Arsenal and Chelsea, among others, though Brentford were emphatic that they didn’t want to sell in the January transfer window.
David Ornstein reported at the time that the most probable scenario was a summer sale or a free transfer in 2025. Right now, it’s looking like a sale is more likely.
Toney was suspended from football for the first half of the season due to breaching FA rules on gambling, but he’s now returned to action.
The striker has three goals in his first four games back with Brentford, following his 20 goals in 33 Premier League games last season.
