Arsenal’s sell-on clause in Folarin Balogun’s AS Monaco contract has now been revealed by various sources, after he completed the move on Wednesday.
Folarin Balogun completed a €40m (£34.3m) transfer from Arsenal to AS Monaco on Wednesday, following his successful loan spell in Ligue 1 with Stade de Reims last season.
Various reports had confirmed that as well as the initial fee, Arsenal would also have a sell-on clause in Balogun’s contract, and we now know what that clause is.
According to Sam Dean of The Telegraph and Kaya Kaynak of Football.London, Arsenal have a 17.5% clause in Balogun’s Monaco deal.
Arsenal have profited from a few sell-on clauses lately, with Konstantinos Mavropanos (10%) and Matteo Guendouzi (15%) among the players to help send money to north London this summer.
Balogun’s clause is even higher than those two, so Arsenal will hope the striker continues to impress with his new club and eventually makes another big-money move elsewhere.
Balogun scored 22 goals on loan with Stade de Reims last season, making 39 appearances in all competitions, which caught the eye across Europe.
As well as Monaco, there were strong links to Inter Milan and almost every club in London.
West Ham United appeared to be the Premier League frontrunners for Balogun’s signature for a while, Crystal Palace made enquiries, and Fulham considered Balogun as a replacement for Aleksandr Mitrovic.
Perhaps most notably, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both made approaches to Arsenal to try and establish the viability of a transfer.
It’s not impossible one of the above clubs could make a return for Balogun if he continues his development.
