Matt Turner kept a clean sheet for the USA against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night as his side reached the Gold Cup quarter-finals.

After winning the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League and the Best Goalkeeper award earlier this month, Arsenal’s Matt Turner has moved on to playing in the Gold Cup with the USMNT.

Turner is one of very few players to feature in both competitions, with the vast majority of the squad being replaced, including fellow Gunners Auston Trusty and Folarin Balogun.

The U.S. generally use a rotated squad in the Gold Cup, but with Turner playing relatively infrequently for Arsenal this season, the competition was likely viewed as a chance to get him some extra minutes.

Turner saved a penalty in his opening game of the tournament against Jamaica, and he got his second start in their third group game against Trinidad and Tobago at the weekend.

In a relatively quiet match, Turner had a couple of saves to make as the USMNT thrashed their opponents 6-0.

The goal-difference swing was important, with the U.S. finishing level on points with Jamaica, but ending up with a goal-difference advantage of four.

A win by just one or two goals would have seen them finishing second in the group, but the 6-0 victory left them in top spot. You can watch the highlights here.

Arsenal report that the clean sheet made Turner the fastest goalkeeper in US history to reach 20 clean sheets and 20 wins, managing the feat in just 30 appearances.

The U.S. will now face the Group D runners-up in the quarter-finals.

Group D’s Guadeloupe, Guatemala, and Canada are all capable of finishing second ahead of their final group games on Tuesday afternoon, with Guatemala currently holding the spot.

Should Turner and his national team continue to progress, he’ll remain on international duty until the final on July 16th.
