Matt Turner kept his excellent penalty-save record going with a stop from Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey on international duty on Saturday night.
After winning the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League and the Best Goalkeeper award earlier this month, Arsenal’s Matt Turner has moved on to playing in the Gold Cup with the USMNT.
Turner is one of very few players to feature in both competitions, with the vast majority of the squad being replaced.
For example, Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun and Auston Trusty have both left the camp, along with most of the first-choice lineup.
The U.S. generally use a rotated squad in the Gold Cup, but with Turner playing relatively infrequently for Arsenal this season, the competition was likely viewed as a chance to get him some extra minutes.
So the USMNT and Turner kicked off their Gold Cup campaign against Jamaica on Saturday night, and the Arsenal goalkeeper made a key contribution to his side securing a point.
There was nothing Turner could do about Jamaica’s opening goal, a powerful free header from around eight yards out. But the goalkeeper ensured Jamaica failed to double their lead around the half-hour mark.
Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey stepped up to the penalty spot after Aidan Morris fouled Kevon Lambert, but Turner guessed the right way and kept the shot out to maintain the 1-0 scoreline.
The highlights of the match are available here or below, with Turner’s save at the 1:38 timestamp.
The penalty was the 24th that Turner has faced in his career (excluding shootouts), and he’s saved 11 of those.
The general consensus is that penalties are scored 79% of the time, so for Turner to keep his opponents to a 54% conversion rate is very impressive.
Brandon Vazquez went on to score for the U.S. in the 88th minute, levelling the game late on.
Turner’s side snatched a point, and their attentions will now turn to their next two group games against Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago.
