After their disappointing elimination from the u17 European Championships last week, England had one more game to determine their qualification for the u17 World Cup, which takes place later this year.

The u17 Euros doubled as a qualification event for the World Cup, with the four semi-finalists all qualifying for the tournament this November.

But Europe has five qualification spots, meaning one of the losing quarter-finalists also had a chance to qualify for the tournament.

The four losing quarter-finalists were ranked by various criteria based on their performance at the u17 Euros, with England and Switzerland ranking the highest.

As a result, the two sides faced off in a playoff, with the winner qualifying for the World Cup.

Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri started the match, with Myles Lewis-Skelly initially on the bench. Lewis-Skelly was introduced in the second half, with England 2-1 down.

With 24 minutes left, Lewis-Skelly picked up possession on the left-hand side, shielding the ball as he ran into the box before squaring for Zak Lovelace to score.

That equaliser ended up being the turning point, with Michael Golding and Kadan Young scoring in the next 10 minutes to make it 4-2 to England.

That was how the game ended, and England will now join France, Germany, Poland, and Spain as Europe’s entrants in the 2023 u17 World Cup.

The draw for the competition will be held in August 2023.

Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri were pivotal in England securing the group stage results that ultimately earned them a spot in the World Cup playoff.

Nwaneri scored England’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Croatia in the group opener, with Lewis-Skelly also winning a penalty (missed by a teammate). Lewis-Skelly then scored an impressive opener against the Netherlands in a 4-1 victory to secure a top-two finish.

The two will now begin their summer holidays, with Lewis-Skelly set to sign his new Arsenal deal and speculation continuing over whether Nwaneri will do the same.
