With Fulham now safe from relegation, they owe Arsenal the first of their add-on payments for Bernd Leno’s transfer.

Bernd Leno joined Fulham from Arsenal over the summer, in an initial deal worth just £3m. However, the signing involved multiple add-on payments relating to appearances and Fulham’s survival in the Premier League.

Arsenal were in line to earn an extra £2m if Fulham avoided relegation once, plus another £2m if they avoided it twice, and another £1m if Leno hits a certain appearance target.

Fulham have now mathematically secured Premier League safety, so the first of those payments is now due, bringing the total fee to £5m so far.

It’s likely Leno will also hit his appearance target before long, having played 33 times for Fulham already. Given his positive performances for the side, he’s likely to remain a starter again next season.

There’s no doubt that Fulham got a good deal, even if they do end up paying the remaining £3m over the next year or so.

£8m for a starting goalkeeper is more than acceptable for a Premier League club.

Leno himself said the deal was a bargain, speaking back in March ahead of Arsenal’s game against the Gunners.

“I have to say it’s a bargain,” Leno said. “It’s very, very cheap, especially in the Premier League.

“I am not £3m — I’m probably worth a little bit more. Otherwise I would be a very bad player!”

But from an Arsenal point of view, it’s good to have a little more money in the bank ahead of an important summer of transfer business. Even if it could have been even more.

The Gunners are also set to cash in on Pablo Mari, who has reportedly fulfilled the requirements for AC Monza to activate his £6m obligation to buy.
