Bernd Leno thinks he’s worth more than Arsenal sold him for, but he has no hard feelings towards his former club.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno completed a transfer to Fulham in the summer, joining for an initial fee of £3m. Speaking about that deal this week, the German international suggested he’s worth more than that.

“I have to say it’s a bargain,” Leno said. “It’s very, very cheap, especially in the Premier League.

“I am not £3m — I’m probably worth a little bit more. Otherwise I would be a very bad player!”

In fairness, the fee is almost guaranteed to go up. Arsenal will earn an extra £2m when Fulham avoid relegation this season, and another £2m if they do so again next year.

The Gunners will also get £1m if Leno hits a certain appearance target, which seems very likely right now.

At the very least, it looks like Arsenal will be bringing in £6m in total, and with how well Fulham have been playing, the additional £2m for staying up next year also looks like a safe bet.

All the same, it’s a price Fulham will be happy to pay for one of the league’s top-performing goalkeepers this campaign.

Despite Arsenal selling him on after dropping him to the bench for Aaron Ramsdale, Leno says he still has a good relationship with his former club and their supporters.

“I don’t have toxic [feelings] or bad energy for Arsenal,” Leno said. “It didn’t end in the perfect way, but my reception at the Emirates was really good. I get fans coming up to me saying, ‘thank you for your four years… you were very good’.

“I was really happy with my performances. Even when they dropped me, I did nothing wrong. I came through the front door and I left through the front door. I still have a connection to the club.”

Unfortunately, that cordial relationship will have to be put on hold this week, as Arsenal need to deny Leno a clean sheet on Sunday to keep their title challenge ticking over. Then he can return to his best form against Manchester United next week.
