Amid the current transfer links between Arsenal and Wolves winger Pedro Neto, an old interview highlights that he used to support the Gunners.
On Monday morning, David Ornstein broke the news that Pedro Neto is Arsenal’s transfer priority for the remainder of the summer window, with the Gunners’ interest concrete and unanimous.
A deal reportedly won’t be easy, but perhaps it will be helped by the fact Neto himself used to support Arsenal as his boyhood team in England.
“When I was a kid, my favourite team in England was Arsenal,” Neto said in 2020. “Arsenal, yeah, because with Arsene Wenger I thought [even though] they didn’t win trophies, they played very good football.”
Ornstein isn’t the only person to suggest there could be a late move for Neto this summer.
Fabrizio Romano wrote last week for CaughtOffside that although there was no deal advanced for Neto yet, Wolves were planning to evaluate his future amid links to Arsenal and Chelsea, adding that it “could be an interesting one in the final days”.
Earlier this month, Arsenal’s interest in Neto was shot down by Mirror Deputy Sport Editor Alex Richards, who said the move was “not happening”.
Yet it seems Arsenal were already in talks with the player’s agent at that stage, the Gunners were evidently just trying to keep things quiet.
A lot will depend on Wolves valuation of Neto. They don’t currently plan to sell the player, so Arsenal would need to bid enough to change their minds without breaching FFP.
The addition of Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes is the one positive sign, as Wolves have at least added some attacking options this window.
