Largely fan-driven speculation linking Pedro Neto to Arsenal has been shot down by the mainstream media.

Arsenal fans have been trying to guess who the club might be pursuing as a signing on the wings this summer, given the lack of concrete information on possible options.

But when there’s so little information available, some supporters simply begin to make their own links up.

That’s seemingly what happened with Pedro Neto, as Arsenal fans on Twitter got excited by the prospect of the 22-year-old moving to North London during the opening Premier League weekend.

It helped that Neto put in a strong performance for Wolves against Leeds, with a few eye-catching moments.

Yet Mirror Deputy Sport Editor Alex Richards reports that the move is “not happening”. Richards wasn’t sure where the speculation had come from to begin with.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a good answer to that question. Arsenal fans wanted it to be true, so they believed it.

Neto scored one goal and assisted one in 13 appearances last season, a campaign that was heavily hit by a knee injury.

The winger didn’t make an appearance until February, didn’t make a start until March, and didn’t complete 90 minutes in a single game.

With his goal and assist coming in the last three games of the campaign – against Manchester City and Liverpool, no less – it looked like Neto was getting back to form. But he’ll be aiming to do so now with Wolves, not Arsenal.
