Serge Aurier was released by Tottenham when his contract was cancelled by mutual consent and his agent is now hard at work trying to find him a new club and using Arsenal to help him do it.

Serge Aurier is an Arsenal fan. We all knew that when he signed for Tottenham after angling for a move to Arsenal.

Now a free agent, stories started appearing in the press recently about the player wanting a move to Arsenal once again, tales of fancy that have morphed in some places to make it look like a deal could be imminent.

Of course, you should never rule anything out, but I’d be very surprised if the 28-year-old right-back turned up at Arsenal.

For a start, we already have five million right backs. Plus, he’s a bit of a liability and certainly doesn’t fit the profile of players the club have been looking to bring in.

At the end of 2017, Aurier was asked by the French TV station whether he preferred Olympique de Marseille or Arsenal, with Marseille are the rivals of former club PSG.

You might have expected Aurier to say “neither”, to refuse to answer, or to pick Marseille to keep his current club happy, given that he’d been at Spurs for six months by this point.

However, the self-confessed Arsenal-supporting Ivorian simply answered “Arsenal”.

This probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone who has been following Aurier for a while.

A few years before he joined PSG, Serge was linked with Arsenal, and fans discovered a number of pictures of him wearing the Gunners’ shirt in his free time.

Aurier, however, is no stranger to controversy.

As we’ve reported on in the past, alleged homophobic slurs caused him to fall out with the PSG manager, disciplinary issues have seen him miss 27 games through suspension, and an assault charge left him with a two-month prison sentence.
