Emi Martinez officially joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in a £20m deal on Wednesday, boosting the Gunners’ summer transfer budget.

Both Arsenal and Aston Villa confirmed the transfer of Emi Martinez from the former to the latter on Wednesday morning. Martinez posted a personal video farewell to the club and the fans on their website, remaining a popular figure despite his decision to leave.

Unfortunately, it’s time to move on now. Arsenal will reportedly bring in £20m for the goalkeeper, holding out for that figure and rejecting multiple bids under their valuation. The question now is over how they’ll spend the money.

First things first, it’s pretty clear Arsenal want to bring in a goalkeeper. David Raya was their first choice, but Brentford are unwilling to negotiate. Even if they were, the keeper would use up most of the £20m on his own, if not all of it.

Instead, Arsenal are opting for a budget option for the backup slot. They’re planning to bring in Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson from Ligue 1 club Dijon, a recommendation of goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana. He’ll sign a five-year deal and only cost around £1.5m.

Arsenal already brought in £1.5m (plus add-ons) for the sale of Sam Greenwood to Leeds, so that certainly leaves money to spend.

After Rúnarsson, it’s onto the two Arsenal fans are most excited about, Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey. Reports suggest the club are still in for both, though neither will come cheap. They could cost as much as £101m combined.

The £20m for Martinez only comes to a fifth of that total. Arsenal realistically need to complete the sales of Torreira, Sokratis and Kolasinac before they can even move for one of the two, particularly when you factor in the homegrown quota.

After that, you may see more Arsenal players on the market (Elneny? Guendouzi? Mustafi? Chambers?) as the club push for a big summer.
