Writing on Instagram, Sam Greenwood sent a farewell message to Arsenal on Thursday. The young striker was preparing to move to Leeds United, holding a medical and completing the signing earlier this week.

“I want to say a big thank [you to] Arsenal and the supporters for the last two years of my career,” Greenwood said. “Been an honour to play for the club while meeting some special people and making even better memories.”

Arsenal then made their announcement on Friday morning.

The 18-year-old will reportedly move for £3m including bonuses, with reports suggesting he never fully settled with Arsenal and grew homesick.

Moving to Leeds will bring him a lot closer to Sunderland.

It’s quite likely Arsenal lose all four of their primary youth centre-forwards this summer. Folarin Balogun is also on the transfer list, whilst Tyreece John-Jules is looking for a loan. Greenwood is moving to Leeds and the club are releasing Alfie Matthews.

Luke Plange (17) and Khayon Edwards (16) are the next up in the pecking order for the u23s right now. I’m sure they’ll appreciate the opportunities if they get them, but it’s certainly a fast-track route through the academy for both.
