Still only 23, Miedema is already breaking records on all fronts with her club and country.

Now, she will go up against England defender, Lucy Bronze, Ballon d’Or winnner Megan Rapinoe and Chelsea’s latest addition, Sam Kerr.

The award, now in its sixth year, will be decided by the public.

Ada Hegerberg won in 2019.

“This one is predominantly for the fans, it’s the people who support the women’s game and watch every week, and when they vote for you it feels nice to have that support, especially being a defender,” Bronze said.

“Winning the Champions League final was special, I was happy with how I performed, the team performed. It’s the marquee game so that was a huge highlight.”

“I was so disappointed to lose the World Cup semi-final against the US, but the whole image of the England team has changed in this last year,” she said. “The attention, the support was unbelievable and the recognition we’re now getting is really special.”

Asked about her personal highlight from 2019, Miedema told the BBC, “Probably a couple – winning the league at Brighton with Arsenal. I felt like this was a very special day as the club really needed it and we worked really hard for it. Then going to the World Cup and playing a final that no-one expected, I think is something amazing that you probably only experience once in your life.”

Voting on the BBC website opened at 7am on Wednesday morning and is open until 9am on March 2. The winner will be announced on March 24 on BBC World Service
