A close friend of Arsene Wenger has reportedly spoken with French outlet, L’Equipe, and although they didn’t reveal anything we don’t already know, they did confirm that the contract is on the table for him to sign if he wants.
It’s been widely-known for a while that Arsenal are happy for Wenger to stay and have offered him a contract extension once his current one is up at the end of the season. However, it’s down to the manager to sign it and he’s always claimed that if he’s not helping the club, he’ll leave.
L’Equipe report that Stan Kroenke wants to keep Wenger at the club to ensure Champions League football without spending much.
The close friend who spoke with the paper didn’t give much away, just that Wenger won’t allow anyone else to influence his decision and that it’ll be a sad day when he finally decides to leave.
“The results are not as expected, the supporters are angry but Arsene is impervious to outside pressure and has the support of the board,” they said [via Sport Witness]. “His sadness will be immense, the day he leaves Arsenal. It is he who will decide his future. His contract renewal is ready. He only has to sign it. He is aware of some errors, especially in recruitment.”
This does feel like the beginning of the end and I’m sure Wenger won’t be the only one who’s immensely sad when he announces he’s leaving.
