Despite the fact that everyone and their mums seemed to think that the deal for Jamie Vardy would be completed by Monday afternoon, it appears as if the Leicester City striker is about to turn us down.

On Friday, reports emerged from numerous reliable sources that we’d triggered the 29-year-old’s release clause. Although talks of a medical were shot down, the deal was supposed to be in place and should have more or less been done by Monday afternoon before Vardy headed off with the rest of the England squad for Euro 2016.

However, when Vardy didn’t eagerly snap up the deal straight away and instead needed a bit of time to make the decision (although not the several days that a local Leicester publication reported), many of us began to realise that Arsenal may not hold the pulling power we once had.

Despite being able to offer the former Fleetwood Town man more money – double what he was earning with the Foxes – they’ve come back with a counter offer and if he was to stay with them, his hero status would reach dizzying heights.

On Monday night, reports that the England international had changed his profile picture on Twitter to him wearing the new Leicester City kit began to emerge but, even after asking around, we’re not sure whether this is legit or just someone pulling our leg.

What’s slightly more concerning, however, is that the Mirror is now claiming that Arsenal are braced for disappointment, saying that after the Foxes showed him their new, improved contract and his team-mates made an ’emotional plea’ for him to stay, he never got back in contact with Arsene Wenger, indicating that he’ll be staying in the midlands.

Looks like we’ve been pied, guys.
