Arsenal are said to be fighting it out with Liverpool for the signature of Leicester City’s England under 20 international Ben Chilwell

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal and Liverpool have both been scouting Chilwell ahead of a possible summer move. Chilwell is highly-rated by Leicester City and was sent out on loan by Claudio Ranieri to Huddersfield Town as he was deemed too good for the under 21s. Steve Rowley watched Chilwell in action for Huddersfield in their 2-0 victory over Birmingham on Saturday.

Obviously it’s not unusual for Arsenal to scout players, but with Arsenal’s left-back production line currently stalling and with Monreal ageing it makes perfect sense for Arsenal to be looking to the future. It’s also not the first time in recent years that Arsenal have been linked with a young English left back with Southampton’s Matt Targett and Ipswich’s (now Bournemouth’s) Tyrone Mings both previously linked.

The rumours suggest that Arsenal have already had a bid turned down for the eighteen year old and are likely to return with another in the near future. In the meantime, Chilwell is expected to return to Leicester in January and fight for a first team place. A new contract is also said to be on the cards.

Time will tell on Chilwell, but Arsenal are definitely on the hunt for a new young left-back.
