Wojciech Szczensy was largely culpable for both Arsenal goals as they lost 2-0 at Southampton on New Year’s Day.

Charging out of his goal as if he’d summoned the spirit of Manuel Almunia for the first, he parried when he could have collected for the second, clearly thinking it was a back-pass (it was never a backpass).

During his press conference after the match Arsene Wenger was asked about his keeper and he simply replied

I don’t want to talk about [him].

David Ospina was left out of the squad for St Mary’s but Wenger confirmed that the Colombian will start against Hull on Sunday and you have to think that a decent showing will see him offered the chance to make the number on shirt his own.

While Szczesny has no doubt improved over recent seasons he is still capable of massive mistakes such as those we saw on Thursday.

Emi Martinez has already been given a chance and while he performed admirably, showed that he is perhaps not quite ready.
