Arsenal’s new centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos could be set to feature in the Gunners’ League Cup clash against Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

Initially, it was reported that Mavropanos was going to be sent out on loan to Werder Bremen as soon as we’d completed the £2m signing of the 20-year-old last week.

The youngster only ever made 16 appearances for his former club PAS Giannina and while Arsene Wenger said he looks good in training, the Frenchman claims he’s not yet ready to play for the first team.

The boss should know seeing as the defender has been in first team training this week.

However, at Arsenal, nothing really ever goes to plan and, according to the Guardian, the Greek u21 international is set to start on the bench for the first leg of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final tie against Chelsea.

If Mavro is included in the squad, that means he won’t be going out on loan this month as he can’t play for another club this season (not including his former club obviously).

Injuries to Laurent Koscielny (Achilles), Sead Kolasinac (ankle) and Nacho Monreal (ankle), leave Arsenal short in defence. Shkodran Mustafi is also expected to face a late fitness test.

Talk about dropping the youngster in at the deep end…
