Jack Wilshere believes that Olivier Giroud being on the bench proves Arsenal’s strength in depth, calling the Frenchman “one of the best strikers in the Premier League”.

Giroud came off the bench and scored yet again when Arsenal drew 1-1 with Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Wilshere, who also came off the bench to help Arsenal get back into the game, believes that being able to call on strikers like Giroud shows what a strong squad Arsenal have.

“I think it shows the depth in our squad,” he told Arsenal.com. “For me Oli is one of the best strikers in the Premier League when he’s on it and he’s on the bench, so it shows what we’ve got.
“There are a lot of games in December, so I’m sure he’s going to get a start and if he’s coming on scoring goals that’s massive for the team and it was an important goal for him today.”

Giroud has yet to start a Premier League game this season due to the form and quality of Alexandre Lacazette. He also spent a lot of time on the bench last season, as Alexis Sanchez had an impressive scoring run while playing down the middle.

While Giroud has sat out to accommodate other strikers, it’s worth remembering that he’s also a very good striker. He has over 100 goals for Arsenal after joining in 2012. His four goals in the Premier League this season have all come from the bench.

Having him coming off the bench is certainly an improvement over the likes of Yaya Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner. Giroud may not be content with this role for much longer, though, as there’s a World Cup coming up. Hence, there are rumours linking him with a move in January.
