Liverpool and England legend John Barnes believes midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a typical Jurgen Klopp signing.

Arsenal sold Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool for £40m on deadline day in a deal that seemingly suited all parties.

One of the motivating factors behind the move was that he wanted more opportunities to play as a central midfielder, and Liverpool legend John Barnes believes he has all the attributes to succeed there.

“Jurgen Klopp likes players who play with high intensity, high energy,” Barnes said. “He can play in one of the three midfield positions. He likes players who are very direct, very strong, very quick, which is what he brings.

“He can also play in one of the wide positions in terms of where Mane or Salah plays. I think he is a typical Jurgen Klopp-type signing.”

Arsenal preferred to use the 24-year-old on the flanks and wing-back where he could make use of his explosive acceleration and dribbling ability. He did get a few games as a central midfielder during his time at Arsenal, but didn’t convince enough to get a long, consistent run.

It is easy to see how he’d fit in at Liverpool. They play with great speed on the counter and energy to harass the opposition. The Ox would add to that. However, his decision-making in the final third has always been suspect.

He was often wasteful in the build-up play and when in good positions at Arsenal. Watching him play for England last night suggests that hasn’t magically improved since leaving.
