Doncaster midfielder, James Coppinger, insists that the League One team won’t be giving Arsenal too much respect during the League Cup clash on Wednesday night.

Doncaster play Arsenal for the first time since December 2005 at 7:45pm on Wednesday and Coppinger is adamant that the lower league team won’t give the hosts too much respect.

“It’s been 12 years since the last game against Arsenal and I’m looking forward to a fantastic night,” said the Donny captain.

“Realistically you have to give them respect because they are a top team – but not too much and hopefully we can catch them out.”

Considering how uninspired the Gunners have looked the Emirates in recent seasons, you can’t really blame the 36-year-old for fancying Donny’s chances.

The Rovers have only just gotten promoted from League Two but despite currently struggling down in 19th in League One after only winning six points from eight games, Darren Ferguson’s side have done alright in the League Cup up until this point.

So far, the Rovers have beaten Bradford City (3-2), Hull (2-0) and Grimsby (1-1; 4-3 on penalties). Therefore, while they’ve not had the toughest running, they’ve beaten every team put in front of them.

What’s more, the Gunners have been knocked out of the League Cup by the likes of Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham in the past.

Out of seven games played against each other, Arsenal have only lost once to Donny and that was back in 1902, so the odds aren’t looking great for Ferguson’s side. However, you’ve got to give it to them – if they don’t think they’ll win, who will?
