Lee Dixon has joined fellow ex-Arsenal players in slating the Gunners’ performance on Sunday at Anfield.

Arsenal were soundly beaten by Liverpool 4-0 at the weekend, and didn’t even seem to be trying for much of the 90 minutes. On air with Kyle Martino, Dixon said of the display: “that’s the worst Arsenal performance I’ve seen live since I retired…I would have been embarrassed.”

He later said on Twitter that he felt like he cared more about the result than the players on the pitch:

It was certainly an awful performance, but unfortunately there are more than a few to choose from when it comes to the worst of the lot. In fact, it’s not even the first time Arsenal have lost by four goals at Anfield in the last few years, as the Gunners were beaten 5-1 at Anfield in 2014.

Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City before they made the trip to face Liverpool in the Premier League. But it seems the Gunners failed to learn any lessons at Anfield and were well-beaten without registering a shot on targets for their troubles. But Arsenal have had bleaker days.

The Gunners’ 8-2 loss to Manchester United and 6-0 loss to Chelsea are result that live long in the memory. So whilst there may have been more embarrassing results suffered by Arsenal, Dixon is right that the performance at Anfield on Sunday has to be right up there with the worst.
