Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has said that signing Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk “would be a good start”.

Speaking on Twitter, Campbell was asked whether he would have N’Zonzi and van Dijk on his Arsenal transfer wishlist, to which he gave the following response:

After Arsenal’s humiliation on Sunday, losing 4-0 to Liverpool at Anfield, Campbell clearly thinks that big changes are needed. Whilst the two players mentioned would represent major deals for the Gunners, the fact that Campbell describes it as a “start” shows just how bad the situation is at the club right now.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks set to join Chelsea, Shkodran Mustafi has reportedly agreed terms with Inter Milan, Lucas Perez has fallen out with the club and has been linked with a return to Spain, while Alexis Sanchez is expected to leave in 12 months at the end of his contract.

If the club hopes to bounce back quickly from the weekend’s embarrassment, making a statement in the transfer market would be one way to do that. A player like van Dijk would be a good signing to revive fans’ hopes of at least getting back into the top four this season.

He’s established in the Premier League and is a big name drawing interest from some of the other big clubs in England, while also playing in a position Arsenal clearly need to strengthen having conceded eight goals in three league games.

N’Zonzi is a dominant central midfielder who can control the play and nullify the opposition. Arsenal’s midfield has been panned by the majority this season. Signing the Sevilla man – who has handed in a transfer request – could be a masterstroke.
