Bordeaux have cancelled a deal for Arsenal’s Wellington Silva, with the Brazilian forward having failed a medical.

The 24-year-old joined Arsenal in 2010 and spent six years at the Emirates Stadium before a return to Brazilian club Fluminense.

He was due to join Bordeaux this week, after Arsenal trigged his £1.5m buy-back clause, but the Ligue 1 side have announced the €5m deal has broken down.

Silva, a Brazilian U21 international, spent the last seven years as a journeyman, having been loaned out to Levante, Alcoyano, Ponferradina, Murcia, Almeria, Bolton Wanderers before moving back to Fluminense.

His career stalled at Arsenal due to a failure to attain a work permit, but he did finally pick up a Spanish passport in 2014 which meant he could represent the Gunners. However, he hadn’t developed enough to feature for the first-team, failing to make a single appearance.

Wellington made 23 appearances last season at Fluminense. He’s so far featured 17 times this season. The playmaker has been looking to settle at one club but his recent setback shrouds his short-term future in doubt.

Bordeaux had arranged a 3pm press conference to announce his signing but the latest news has forced the Ligue 1 club to cancel it.

The reports from Wellington’s medical weren’t deemed satisfactory enough to commence with the transfer and it’s currently unknown if Bordeaux will enquire about his services again.
