This might, quite frankly, be the most pointless rumour that we’ve taken a look at this summer but given the sensationalism loaded into the headlines, we thought we should do it it anyway.

Speaking to people close to Atletico Madrid, we understand that the Spanish side have no intention of selling the young defender, Jose Gimenez. With a €65m buy-out clause in place they are, unsurprisingly, not concerned in the slightest that Arsenal might try and test that out.

Now, it’s being reported that if Arsenal keep pushing for him then Diego Simeone will make a play for Alexis Sanchez.

You know, because this is the playground and that’s how these things happens.

Anyway, it doesn’t overly matter if Simeone does make a move for Sanchez, he’s going nowhere with Arsenal soon to start negotiations over extending his deal, if they haven’t already.

Will he sign a new deal? That’s hard to say at this point given that Arsenal are probably not winning the trophies he thinks he should be collecting. I could be unrealistically optimistic and say ‘of course he will!’ Or negative and say he ‘absolutely won’t’, but the truth is only he knows the answer to that right now and he isn’t telling anyone.

As for Arsenal, apart from needing to add attacking reinforcements, and having already let Joel Campbell go (not that there’s a comparison between him and Sanchez) could you imagine the absolute carnage amongst the fan base if they let Sanchez leave this summer?

Neither side in this rumour wants to let their player leave, and neither club is likely to want to pay what the other would ask even if they did.

Not that I expect this to stop this rumour any time soon.
