Arsenal centre-back and Tunisia international Omar Rekik could be on the move before Friday’s transfer deadline, with Walid El Mechri of Africafoot reporting that 2. Bundesliga club SSV Jahn Regensburg are interested in the signing.

Rekik is still under contract in north London until 2025, but the German club are interested in signing him on a four-year deal, opening negotiations with both player and club.

The same source adds that Eintracht Braunschweig and Plymouth Argyle have also shown interest.

Rekik is reportedly yet to make a decision, but he prefers a move to Germany.

Rekik has had a difficult few seasons at Arsenal. The defender initially had some injury setbacks, and he’s since had problems out on loan.

The Tunisian began 2023/24 on loan with Wigan Athletic in League One, but after 14 appearances he dropped out of the squad in early December – amid rumours that he’d move to join Swiss club Servette FC.

Though that move did take place, registration issues meant Rekik couldn’t play for Servette at all for the duration of his loan. He returned to Arsenal without a single minute played in Switzerland.

The difficulty now is that Rekik wants to play, but Arsenal can’t offer him minutes. With his contract only lasting another year, they won’t be keen to loan him.

A sale is the best option, and it seems that’s what the Gunners are currently negotiating.
