After such a strong start to his Barcelona career, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is experiencing a dip in form with his new side.

In February and March, it was impossible to avoid hearing about how well former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was performing with Barcelona. He’d scored nine goals and assisted one in just 11 games, almost a goal contribution per game.

Yet things haven’t gone quite so well since then. Since April 1st, Aubameyang has two goals and no assists in nine matches.

That coincided with a drop-off in form for Barcelona, who were knocked out of the Europa League and lost league games against Cadiz and Rayo Vallecano during that period.

Aubameyang’s new side will still finish in the top four, so they arguably don’t have much to play for now anyway.

But some Barcelona fans are starting to come out of their honeymoon period with their new striker, complaining about missed chances and a lack of control through the middle when he plays.

This slump was fairly inevitable. We know Aubameyang, we watched him play for Arsenal every week for a few years.

We know he can be a top goalscorer, and we also know he can go through periods of drifting through games. His goals have always come at a certain cost.

It’s a trade-off, and one a top club like Barcelona can probably afford. As long as you have other goalscoring options and other ways to win games, you can handle Aubameyang’s dips in form.

If the 32-year-old had kept scoring at his initial rate with Barcelona, that would have been the surprising thing.

This sort of down period is effectively normal service, and it surely won’t be long until he ends it by getting back in the goals again.
