Premier League clubs are debating today whether to postpone a round of festive fixtures to ease the schedule amid the recent Covid-19 problems.

The Athletic report that the Premier League clubs are debating at 1pm GMT whether or not to postpone a round of festive fixtures to keep the season going.

As things stand, the fixtures on December 28th to December 30th are the most likely to be postponed. For Arsenal, that would mean putting off the visit of Wolves on December 28th.

The managers of each individual club are reportedly united in their concern about the festive fixture list, and they believe their diminished squads won’t be able to handle so many games in such a short space of time.

On the other side of things, the Premier League intend to continue their current schedule as long as it’s safe to do so.

Amazon (who have the rights to that round of fixtures) aren’t expecting the matches to be postponed.

From a purely selfish point of view, the postponement wouldn’t do a great deal for Arsenal.

Wolves is a more winnable fixture than Manchester City a few days later, and Arsenal are yet to have an outbreak in the squad.

As one of the top clubs in the league, the Gunners have an above-average number of players to choose from, and are more able to deal with absences.

The only thing that might make Arsenal consider a postponement would be if there’s a medical risk.

If the data suggests playing three games in a week is going to make it nearly impossible to detect a significant outbreak before it’s too late, then that changes things.

From the outside, we can only speculate about what Arsenal believe to be the pros and cons. With 19 other clubs in the league, it may not be up to them anyway. We should find out more later today.
