After Mesut Özil took to Twitter to support Arsenal during their match against Rapid Vienna, Mikel Arteta praised the midfielder for giving his backing to the team.
Most of us know the situation with Mesut Özil and Arsenal by now, but for everyone else, the long and short of it is that the club’s highest-paid player isn’t part of the Premier League or Europa League squad this season. So he’s ineligible to play.
For once, we actually have something positive to report on the whole saga. The 32-year-old logged onto Twitter on Thursday night to support the team from the sofa, posting throughout the match, and Mikel Arteta certainly had no complaints about that approach.
“This is great,” Arteta said. “This is what I want from all the players that aren’t in our squad. I didn’t expect anything different to that, so it’s good to hear.”
Mesut Özil’s timeline through the match:
When I can’t support on the pitch tonight, I will support in front of the TV in London. What are your predictions for the match? I go for a 4-1 away victory 🔴💪🏼 goalscorers @seadk6, @ElNennY, @LacazetteAlex & Pepe😉#UEL #YaGunnersYa

His goalscorer predictions need a bit of work, but otherwise, Özil is doing a decent impression of your average Arsenal blogger.
We’ll see if he keeps it going at the weekend against Leicester and beyond, although I’d be a bit worried about how the tweets go down after a less positive result. For now, it’s all good fun.
