Speaking after the Arsenal u18s won 4-3 against Brighton & Hove Albion to reach the FA Youth Cup quarter-final, Sam Greenwood had the chance to claim a hat-trick.

Greenwood certainly scored twice on the night. He fired home from close range to open the scoring, then converted a penalty late in the first half, after winning it himself. The controversy was around Arsenal’s fourth goal of the night.

Ben Cottrell looped a ball towards goal, and Brighton keeper Roco Rees went up to catch it. Under pressure from Greenwood, Rees fumbled it into the net, but it wasn’t clear whether Greenwood got a touch.

After the game, the Arsenal media team gave him the chance to claim a hat-trick. The striker refused the opportunity though.

“I’m not claiming the third goal, I’ll admit I didn’t touch it,” Greenwood said. “I am buzzing to score twice but we’ve got to go again in the quarter-finals. I’m really happy to have helped the team tonight.”

It’s great to see a young striker staying honest and admitting when a goal isn’t his. There’s no doubt it’s more important to get the win, even if the winner is an own goal.

At least we aren’t seeing Greenwood swearing on the lives of family members to pad his stats.

On getting the win and the upcoming quarter-finals against Preston or Blackburn, Greenwood was feeling good.

“I’m buzzing,” he said. “The lads dug deep, it was a hard game towards the end but we dug deep and got there in the end. I’m excited we just need to see what happens, who we’re playing and stay focused. I think if we play like we did tonight we’ll play well.
