Borussia Dortmund are reportedly looking to spend a portion of the £97m they got from Barcelona for Ousmane Dembele on Mesut Ozil this summer.
Despite gaining £97m from Barcelona for Dembele – the Catalans’ club record – Dortmund are now without a playmaker and are reportedly looking at bringing in Ozil has the 20-year-old’s replacement.
While Arsene Wenger seems convinced that Ozil, who has under a year left on his current Arsenal deal, will extend his contract, and no other big clubs have really been linked with the 28-year-old until this point, nothing’s set in stone and therefore, there’s a chance that the German could still leave.
With £97m allegedly burning a hole in Dortmund’s pocket, the Sun claim that the Bundesliga side will make a ‘shock move’ for Ozil. However, the Sun also report that Dortmund got £130m for Dembele.
Ozil spent two years at Schalke, Dortmund’s rivals, making 39 appearances while there. Therefore, while the playmaker knows the area, since he grew up near there, whether he would play for them is another matter.
Ozil played another 90 minutes for Arsenal during their 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday and, like the entire team, had a pretty bad day.
He completed just 77% of his passes and only created two chances, compared to 10 during the past two fixtures against Leicester and Stoke.
