Former West Ham player Steve Lomas has urged his old club to sign Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.

• Lomas says Giroud would be a “super signing”
• He believes Walcott would add much needed pace to the West Ham team
• West Ham have reportedly pulled out of the running to sign Giroud as they are not his first preference

West Ham have been one of the clubs heavily interested in Giroud this summer, and would likely have been encouraged by the Frenchman’s comments during pre-season.

Despite being on tour with Arsenal, Giroud admitted he could still leave the club.

Former West Ham captain Steve Lomas believes that Giroud would be a fantastic signing for his old club.

“He’s very undervalued at Arsenal,” he said during the launch of West Ham’s new home kit.

“His goalscoring rate for France and Arsenal is superb. He gets on with his job, he takes knocks. Dare I say it, he plays like a British centre forward, getting hold of the ball in the box and getting on the end of crosses. 

“If we could entice him from Arsenal he’d be a super signing.”

Lomas went on to say that West Ham needed more pace in their team if they’re to play counter-attacking football next season, and identified Walcott as someone they should be going after.

“For periods of last year we were very one-paced throughout the team. When they were playing deep it was very hard to counter teams. No.1 should be a striker, No.2 a bit of pace to help Antonio out, someone like Theo Walcott.

“Walcott’s goal record from wide or up front is good. He’s got pace and he’s at a good age at 28. I don’t know him very well but I know him personally; he’s a very good lad. That’s very important, we need to bringing the right characters into the dressing room.”

West Ham are believed to be long-term admirers of Walcott, but have yet to make a serious offer for him.

Despite Walcott losing his place in the Arsenal team, there’s no sign that he’s looking to leave the club, or that Arsenal are planning on selling him.
