Arsenal-linked Newcastle United player signs new contract

At least one Newcastle United player linked with a move to Arsenal is now set to stay with his current club, as Lewis Miley has signed an extension at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United have confirmed that Lewis Miley has signed a contract extension with the club, with his new terms lasting all the way to 2032.

“I’m really pleased to sign this new contract and commit my future here,” Miley told the club website. “It’s a dream to be representing Newcastle United, so this is a proud moment for me.”

Manager Eddie Howe added: “Lewis fully deserves his new contract as recognition for everything he has achieved over the last few years. It’s also a reflection of the potential for further growth that we all see in him.”

Lee Ryder reiterates in his report for The Journal that Newcastle initially prepared to open talks with Miley in January amid interest from Arsenal, but the Gunners appear to have missed out, and Newcastle now plan to build around the 20-year-old.

Yet Arsenal are still likely to be linked with others in the Newcastle squad this summer, particularly given the failure of Howe’s team to qualify for any form of European football.

Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon have all regularly been talked about as potential Arsenal signings, and the trio could be particularly keen to leave for a Champions League club.

Gordon is the most likely to depart Newcastle, as he was effectively sidelined for the last month of the season due to his desire to leave. But Bayern Munich appear to be the favourites on that front at the moment.

Livramento could end up staying put as a result of his injury problems, with recent reports suggesting interested clubs have been put off paying Newcastle’s £50m valuation by the right-back’s four injuries this season.

Then it’s hard to know what’s going on with Tonali, given the chaos his agents have created in the media in recent months.

The plan had initially been to see what offers Tonali’s camp had after the World Cup, but Italy didn’t end up qualifying. Perhaps that could speed up the decision-making process over the coming weeks.
