Brabrand IF sporting director Andreas Rasch-Christensen spoke to Danish outlet Tipsbladet this week about Arsenal loanee Lucas Nygaard, revealing that the Gunners are planning a trip to visit the club in the near future.

“The plan is for them to visit very soon,” Rasch-Christensen said (via Sport Witness). “They are following him and have a regular dialogue with our goalkeeping coach and staff in relation to, I suppose, finding out what their plans with him should be.

“Lucas has done well in many ways. First and foremost, he fits in really well as a person, and he thrives. The cooperation has been sensible, and I also think he has managed to develop in the right direction.”

As for whether Nygaard’s seemingly positive loan spell might lead to an extended stay, Rasch-Christensen certainly seemed open to the possibility.

“We are really happy to have him here, and I will certainly be open to a dialogue about further progress. I think he is doing well and would like to extend such a loan.

“Whether that’s realistic remains to be seen. It hasn’t been discussed with Arsenal yet, but I could imagine that Arsenal has some plans for him. In any case, we’re certainly not uninterested.”

Despite those comments, it’s probably worth keeping an eye on Nygaard’s minutes over the remaining months of his loan to get a better idea over whether he might genuinely stick around.

The goalkeeper made a positive start to his loan spell, starting seven of Brabrand’s first 13 games after his transfer. But he’s since been benched (or on one occasion left out entirely) for their last six matches in a row.

Loans are always tricky for goalkeepers, and there’s an ever-present risk that you might suddenly drop out of the team never to get another chance. But it does raise the question of whether Arsenal and Nygaard will really be convinced he’s best served sticking around where he is.

The Danish football season doesn’t operate on quite the same schedule as in England, so Brabrand will continue to have matches for a couple of weeks after the Premier League season ends. Their final game of the current campaign is on June 6th against Fremad Amager.
