Arsenal approach AC Milan star for January move

Arsenal’s pursuit of Rafael Leão has been rebuffed, with the AC Milan star reportedly turning down informal overtures from the North London club during the January transfer window.

Despite ongoing tensions with Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca, Leão has opted to remain focused on helping the Rossoneri secure a top-four finish in Serie A.

Leão, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting wide players, is under contract at Milan until 2028.

While the Portuguese international’s future at the club appears uncertain due to his strained relationship with Fonseca, Milan are intent on keeping their talisman until at least the summer.

The 24-year-old forward, who signed a long-term deal in 2023 amid significant interest from England and France, is expected to command a high transfer fee if he becomes available.

For Arsenal, Leão’s decision is disappointing as they aim to strengthen their attacking depth to sustain their Premier League title challenge.

Manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add firepower following the long-term absence of Bukayo Saka through injury, but Leão has signalled that any discussions about his future will have to wait until the end of the season.

While some reports have suggested that Jorge Mendes is working to engineer a transfer for Leão, sources close to the situation have dismissed these claims, claiming that the winger’s focus remains solely on Milan’s current campaign.

Whether Arsenal revisits their interest in the summer or shifts their attention elsewhere will likely depend on their ability to compete with other European giants eyeing the Portugal international.
