Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is on loan with Wrexham this season, and the 22-year-old had an excellent weekend with the Welsh club.

Keeping a clean sheet against Forest Green Rovers was one thing, the 6-0 win was another, but the fact that it secured promotion to League One would certainly have been the highlight of the weekend for the goalkeeper.

Then, on top of that, Okonkwo was named in the official EFL League Two Team of the Season at the 2024 EFL Awards on Sunday.

Okonkwo didn’t make his debut for Wrexham in League Two until the 10th match day of the season, and he had a brief absence from the team in late November after suffering an injury to his jaw.

But the goalkeeper has ended up making 34 league appearances for Wrexham so far, keeping 13 clean sheets. In his four cup appearances, Okonkwo kept a further two clean sheets, for 15 in all competitions.

It’s been another excellent campaign for the young goalkeeper, who was also very successful in the first half of 2023 with Austrian side Sturm Graz.

Okonkwo ended up lifting the Austrian Cup with Sturm after helping them to a penalty shootout win over RB Salzburg in the quarter-finals, before keeping clean sheets in the semi-final and final.

The step back down to the fourth tier of English football was somewhat surprising after that, but Okonkwo couldn’t have done much better with the opportunity at Wrexham. It remains to be seen what the next steps are for the Arsenal keeper.
