Over the weekend, we wrote about Arsenal loan goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who had kept three clean sheets in his previous four games to put his loan side Wrexham in contention for promotion.

But their luck turned on Tuesday night, as Okonkwo was forced off with an injury.

Okonkwo had made his 12th consecutive start for Wrexham in all competitions, and he seemed in good form, making a solid save early on.

The Arsenal man was then on hand to bravely collect the ball at the feet of Harrogate striker Josh March, but he picked up a blow to the jaw in the process.

After that, Okonkwo required treatment on the pitch twice, receiving painkillers, and he flapped at a cross in an uncharacteristic fashion.

Wrexham opted to withdraw him at half-time, with the goalkeeper reportedly feeling “dazed”.

Following the final whistle, with the game ending 2-2, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was quick to insist of the injury: “I don’t think it’s serious.”

But with Okonkwo performing so well in his minutes with Wrexham so far, and an FA Cup tie against Yeovil Town on Sunday, there’s obvious concern in the fanbase. Particularly given the potential risk of a concussion.

The Athletic report that Okonkwo has overperformed his xG conceded by 3.4 goals this season, facing 11.4 xG worth of chances but only conceding eight times.

The same report adds that Okonkwo was well on the way towards another loan to Europe over the summer, before Wrexham made their move, and his stock is rising again this season.

Okonkwo now faces a race against time to get fit again for Wrexham’s upcoming cup tie and to keep his place for the remainder of the season.
