Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri is on the cusp of a breakthrough into the first team.

The 17-year-old midfielder, who holds the record for the youngest Premier League debutant, has impressed manager Mikel Arteta with his talent and work ethic. Nwaneri recently signed his first professional contract with the Gunners, fending off interest from rival clubs.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has laid down the gauntlet for teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, urging him to capitalise on his “very close” proximity to the first team.

This comes after Nwaneri signed his first professional contract with the Gunners last week, fending off interest from Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City.

Nwaneri burst onto the scene last season, etching his name in history as the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League at the tender age of 15. Despite featuring primarily for the youth teams this season, where he’s racked up an impressive 14 goals in 14 appearances, Nwaneri has also enjoyed brief cameos with the senior squad, including a substitute appearance in Arsenal’s dominant 6-0 victory over West Ham United in February.

Nwaneri’s precocious talent and rapid rise have naturally attracted the attention of rival clubs. However, Arsenal acted swiftly to secure his future and have worked hard to demonstrate his pathway to the first team.

“I was really happy [for Nwaneri signing a professional contract],” Arteta said. “He had a great day, and it was a proud moment to see another academy graduate signing his pro contract. He is very close to the first team. The opportunity is there, now he needs to take it.”

This sentiment was echoed by Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker: “We are extremely proud of Ethan and his journey… Ethan’s journey now continues, and we will all be there alongside him to support his development.”

Nwaneri’s technical abilities, particularly his control of the ball and possession, fit perfectly with Arsenal’s playing style. While he continues to hone his skills with the youth teams, Arteta’s challenge suggests Nwaneri is on the cusp of a more permanent role within the first-team squad.

Time will tell if Nwaneri can secure a regular spot in Arteta’s plans, but one thing is certain: the future looks bright for this young talent.
